Riccardo Licata was educated as a painter. In the early 1950's he became involved in working with mosaics and started working with different Italian glass manufacturers, S.A.L.I.R and Cenedese. For a short period between 1953-1954 and in 1956 he was working with the Venini glassworks, primarily exploring the use of mosaics, "murrine", in his different designs.
