a "Savoy/3030" dark green glass vase, Iittala Glassworks, Finland ca.

Blown into wooden mould, faint signature ALVAR AALTO IITTALA 50 (? blurred). Height 15,2 cm.
In the early 1950's they were experimenting with executing the different models by Aalto blown into wooden moulds. The were executed in both clear and coloured glass.

Saleroom notice

The vase is executed and signed at Iittala, 1950's.

Provenance

Architect Judith Turner von Huth. In 1952 she made a study trip to visit Alvar Aalto in Finland. She was given this vase as a gift from Aalto at the time.

Aalto was a great ambassador for Finnish design at a time when the Finnish people were thinking about how to present themselves to the rest of the world. He gave equal weight to form and function, and was inspired by the Finnish landscape. Aalto is one of the most important representatives of modern architecture and has created its own architecture direction, whose aesthetic effect is based on careful planning of the buildings in relation to the environment, a human dimension and good sense of material.
