I serien "Shadows, reflections and all that sort of things" har Puranen fotograferat gamla borgerliga porträttmålningar med avsikt att väcka de avporträtterade personernas förflutna till liv. Bilderna blev på sätt och vis visuella symboler med en kulturell innebörd. De första fotograferingarna för serien gjorde Puranen redan 1991 i Sinebrychoffs konstmuseum i samband med ett annat projekt. När han vandrade omkring i museets salar väcktes hans intresse för det ljus och den sidobelysning som avspeglade sig på porträttmålningarnas yta.
