A Japanese black and gilt lacquer, mother of pearl and bone inlaid hardwood Shodona, Edo period.

Vase shaped. Profusely decorated with flowers, birds and traditional figures, with an asymmetrical arrangement of shelves, cupboards and drawers, with pierced foliate borders, panels and brackets, on a conformingly pierced inscrolled stand. Height 222 cm, width 176 cm, depth 45 cm.

Wear, damges, cracks, repair, missing pieces.

Provenance

From a Swedish collection, purchased from Kunst und Antiekhandel van Schilderijen, Hofdstraat 139, Apeldoorn.September 1st, 1960. Prior to that according to the dealer from the Sultan of Jahore.

The Dutch Malacca (1641-1825).

In the black and white image it is standing on a later wooden stand, now missing.
