More information

The young nobleman in the portrait bears a striking likeness to Le Dauphin, Louis XVII (1785-1795), born Louis-Charles, as the younger son of King Louis XVI of France and Queen Marie Antoinette.
Louis-Charles was born at Versailles in 1785, a few years before the outbreak of the French Revolution. He was locked up along with his family in the Temple prison in 1792, and would never be freed. Louis XVII never ruled; he died at the age of ten.
