More information

The picture of Nadja Auermann for Harper’s Bazaar was taken in January 1995. Demarchelier is represented by Staley-Wise Gallery New York. They describe his artistry as follows:
“I have that one second, the moment she forgets about the camera, when I can make someone relax and become her real self. That is the moment I want to capture,” states Patrick Demarchelier, internationally renowned fashion and portrait photographer known for his ability to represent the true personalities of his subjects. He discovered his passion at 17, experimenting with his first camera. By 1975, he had moved to New York and was working for Vogue, beginning to build a portfolio that now includes innumerable celebrities and supermodels. Princess Diana admired his work and, in 1989, commissioned him to photograph her and Princes William and Harry, leading to his role as the first non-British official photographer for the Royal family.

Artist

Patrick Demarchelier was most famously known as a fashion photographer, but in more recent years he has started working in a more artistic vein. Upon turning 17 years old, Demarchelier was given his first camera, an Eastman Kodak. He taught himself how to photograph, develop, and retouch his surroundings. He eventually moved from Paris to New York City in 1975 where he worked with well-known photographers such as Henri Carier-Bresson, Terry King, and Jacque Guilbert. His photographs gained the attention of magazines such as Elle and Marie Claire, and he soon began to work for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Demarchelier has also done commercial works for large brands such as Dior, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Yves Sait Laurent, and Calvin Klein. He has also done cover photoshoots for magazines such as Rolling Stones, Glamour, Life, and Newsweek. Patrick Demarchelier is undoubtedly one of the biggest, most successful international fashion photographers of our generation.
