Waldemar Lorentzon var den förste av de tre kusinerna (Erik och Axel Olson) som fick göra en konstresa till kontinenten. I ett brev till Egon Östlund skriver han i februari 1922 från München:
"Här i München hade jag turen att på Caspari (ett galleri) få se Kokoschka. Det pågår en hel utställning av honom för närvarande... Här fann jag konst, lidelsefull och frigjord konst... Det rörde sig som glöder i aska, det blixtrade till och brann, flammande förtärande ur dessa bilder. Det var modern konst...."
