In this painting, the British artist Marmaduke Cradock depicted a hummingbird, a pheasant, some pigeons and ducks together in a landscape by water. Cradock was mainly known for his motif's with birds but also portrayed other animals. He was self-taught as an artist and influenced by painters such as Melchior d'Hondecoeter, Peter Frans Casteels, and Jakob Bogdani. Cradock preferred painting native birds before exotic.
