Montague Dawson (1985-1973) was the grandson of the British painter Henry Dawson (1811-1878). The young Montague showed artistic talent and trained in London. In 1914 Dawson joined the navy and served during The Great War until 1918. After that he was the first officially appointed artist to accompany the steamer S: t George to the South Seas and the images he made during the expedition was widely spread and appreciated by the public. This was the start of one of the most successful marine artistry in Britain. After World War II Dawson earned great success with his historical marine motifs which showed the naval history of Great Britain. Amongst Dawson’s greatest admirers we find the American Presidents Dwight D Eisenhower and Lyndon B Johnson and he is represented in the British Royal Collections.
