Under sent 1960-tal och framåt framträdde en ny form av dokumentärfotografi, ett slags topografiska skildringar av vardagliga och till synes dystra omgivningar. Det var en typ av landskapsfotografier, osentimentala och nästan vetenskapligt upplysande. Bernd och Hilla Becher fokuserade på industrialismens landskap. Bilderna innehåller sociala och politiska tolkningsmöjligheter i lika hög grad som de kan uppskattas för sina estetiska uttryck. Paret Becher är representerade i Moderna Museets samling.
